Casual Backstage Technician
The Stockport Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre presents cinema screenings and live events all year around, including live bands, comedy, plays, opera, ballet and community events. We are also a licensed wedding venue and regularly host private events, both in our Plaza tea rooms and on stage.
Roles and responsibilities:
You will be providing technical support to all events within the Plaza business, therefore previous experience of working with Stage Technologies, Sound, Lighting or AV equipment is beneficial, although specific training on all in house equipment, systems and procedures will be provided. Plaza crew are not specialised, you may be asked to step into any backstage role once suitably experienced.
You will be expected to support and uphold the ethos of the Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre and act as a suitable ambassador for our venue at all times when dealing with members of the public and touring companies.
You will also be expected to follow Plaza safe working procedures at all times, and encourage a safe and healthy working environment for yourself and your fellow team members.
Plaza staff and volunteers are encouraged to work inter-departmentally when necessary, so there are regular opportunities to learn and exercise skills in other departments.
Person Specification:
All applicants must be 18 or over.
We positively encourage applications from people with a lifetime of skills to share and utilise. As a volunteer organisation we do recognise that many skills acquired outside of the theatre environment are easily transferrable to backstage roles. Experience of working in engineering, carpentry, computing, etc. is an asset.
The Plaza has many volunteer staff therefore experience working in the volunteer sector can be useful.
Holders of a BTEC in Technical Theatre, Stage Management or equivalent are welcomed. Students (over 18) working towards this qualification level are also encouraged.
Hours of work:
Hours of work are variable depending on the requirements of the event on each day.
Personnel will be called for a minimum 4 hour call for live events and 2 hours for cinema set-up/derig as and when required.
Although hours are normally arranged so that shifts are between 4 and 12 hours long, the working day can very occasionally start as early as 7am and can finish as late as 2am the next morning, therefore flexibility is crucial to any backstage role.
