Collection Pipe is Music To Our Ears!
The Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre receives no external funding so your much loved 1932 Art Deco gem welcomes the amazing support we get from guests enjoying productions and events at The Plaza, dining in our Cafe Lounge and with much appreciated donations in our buckets collections or fundraising events.
A wonderful addition to our fundraising is this fabulous converted ‘Stopped Flute’ Pipe which will now have pride of place at events such as our next Organ Coffee Morning which is taking place on Saturday 10th August from 11.00am and any donations will be very much appreciated.
The history of this Organ Pipe is that it originally was part of The Astoria in Brixton, Londons Mighty Compton Organ which was installed when the venue opened in 1929 as a Cinema.
The Astoria Mighty Compton Organ was a 3-manual 12-rank organ inaugurated by George Pattman in the magnificent surroundings of a sumptuos ‘atmospheric’ auditorium that featured towers, foliage, statues and even a medieval style bridge and balcony above the proscenium arch where performers could appear and choirs entertain guests.
The Astoria is still trading in London and a small part of their original Compton Organ will now support The Plaza with your help for mnay more years to come which certainly will be music to our ears!
