Restoration Update – 24.01.13
As the final part of our Pantomime set is removed its time to focus on the Spring Spruce Up that takes place each year to ensure that Stockport’s art deco gem continues to shine and retain her crown as an award winning restored venue serving her public as she welcomes them for one of the myriad of attractions she offers.
Some of the work undertaken are labours of love that we work hard to fund throughout the year with any profits that we make from bucket collections and fundraising events as we do not recieve any external funding.
Our current restoration project is the unveiling of the Terrazo flooring leading from the Circle mezzanine up to the rear of the Balcony, that has been covered for decades since probably the 1950s in thick red lead style paint. The task is proving quite a feat to remove all remnants of the red peril as there are layers of well trodden substance coating what will eventually be a gleaming final section of our main staircase.
Unfortunately there are times we have unforeseen works which appear at the top of our action list such as the areas of plaster and decorative paint work damaged during recent heavy rain when our neighbouring buildings damaged guttering was unable to cope with the downpour and the rain water found the easiest route to escape….through the Plaza…
Works in our auditorium should be finished within a couple of weeks after which its onwards and upwards with more of the works that keep the Plaza in her perfect condition.
