Restoration Update – 27.01.17
It’s 2017 and as we head into our new year fundraising to continue the astounding Restoration and Maintenance of our Art Deco gem we look back at two particularly wonderful examples of the dedication, commitment and expertise that has been shown in restoring original features to our much loved venue both of which took place and were completed in 2016.
With the support of the wonderful ‘Friends of The Plaza’ we were able to fund the expert recreation of the original murals which graced our auditorium on our opening day in 1932 and under the expert artistry of artist Brigid Brind these creative masterpieces depicting musical instruments can be seen adorning the front of our auditorium in enhanced silver and gold.
The selection of instruments within the Murals includes depictions of trumpets, a harp, guitars and adaptations of instruments that emphasised the musical element of the Variety Theatre presentations that graced our stage in 1932 and ever since for 85 glorious years.
Another project which deserves much applause is the recreation of our Cafe Boards that featured in original photographs taken on our opening day – October 7th 1932 and Ian Porter one of our magnificent volunteers was able to use these images to recreate these wonderful wall hangings which once again adorn our Cafe wall and Main staircase.
The colourings of these Boards were not detailed on any original plans therefore as we know the colourings on the main stairs are exact to those from our opening day the soft jade and pink from the walls were used to enhance the black and white surround and now have pride of place in The Plaza….Well done Ian!
